Mount Fuji, Japanese Fuji-san, also spelled Fujisan, also called Fujiyama or Fuji no Yama, highest mountain in Japan. It is a volcano that has been dormant since its last eruption, in 1707 but is still generally classified as active by geologists. Although the exact origin of the name Fuji remains unknown, it is thought that it comes from either the Ainu fire goddess Fuchi or a possible kanji reading meaning “eternal”.
Sagari is a strange apparition from West Japan and Kyushu, particularly Okayama and Kumamoto prefectures. It takes the form of a grotesque horse’s head, which drops down from hackberry trees to startle travelers on the road. Sagari is known to drop down right in front of someone’s face and scream their unholy cry. However, those who hear a sagari’s whinnying and screaming may be stricken with a terrible fever. Sagari come from the spirits of horses that die on the road and are discarded and left to rot where they fall. The horses’ souls sometimes get caught in the trees as they rise from the bodies. The ones that stick in the trees cannot pass on to the next word and transform into these yokai.
Samurai Champloo is a 2004 Japanese historical adventure anime television series. The series is set in a fictionalized version of Edo period Japan, blending traditional elements with anachronistic cultural references including hip-hop. The series follows the exploits of tea waitress Fuu, vagrant outlaw Mugen, and Ronin Jin. Fuu saves Mugen and Jin from execution, then forces the pair to aid in her quest to find a samurai who smells of sunflowers. Structured similarly to a road movie, the series focuses on tolerance and acceptance of minorities contrasted against its setting, with a central theme being the portrayal and acceptance of death.
